Discovery Bank, a leading digital bank delivering innovative retail banking services, has successfully completed the upgrade and modernisation of its payments platform. The initiative transitions the bank from SAP Payment Engine 9.0 to SAP Payment Centralization on SAP S/4HANA Banking, establishing a centralised, more resilient and scalable payments hub.
The go-live took place on 19 April 2026, marking a significant milestone in strengthening Discovery Bank’s payments processing capabilities and aligning the platform with modern payment infrastructure requirements, including ISO 20022 standards.
Prior to the upgrade, Discovery Bank’s payments environment was operating on SAP Payment Engine 9.0, a platform version that has reached the end of mainstream maintenance. This introduced growing operational risk while limiting the bank’s ability to respond quickly to evolving payment scheme requirements and data standards.
As the global payments ecosystem rapidly transitions toward ISO 20022 and new messaging frameworks such as CBPR+, maintaining a flexible and future-ready platform has become a strategic priority. The modernisation initiative was therefore launched to secure a long-term, resilient foundation for high-criticality payments processing.
To address these challenges, Discovery Bank implemented SAP S/4HANA Banking for Payment Centralization, a modern payments hub designed to support centralised processing across both domestic and cross-border payment flows.
The initiative was delivered through close collaboration between Discovery Bank’s own business and technical teams and SAP Fioneer. A key role was played by Alejandro Juarez from Bancon, who served as the primary Payment Engine specialist on the project, supporting both functional and development activities throughout the upgrade.
The project followed a single go-live approach, with delivery readiness driven by strong cutover planning, stability-first governance and clear ownership across teams leading up to the April launch.
The modernisation delivers immediate operational benefits for Discovery Bank’s payments environment. The centralised platform provides stronger resilience and scalability, while enhanced monitoring and transparency improve day-to-day operational control. Adoption of ISO 20022 also brings improved data standardisation and quality, enabling greater automation and reducing the need for manual intervention over time.
Beyond compliance, this milestone establishes a strategic platform foundation for continued payments transformation. The centralised hub architecture positions Discovery Bank to adapt more easily as payment schemes evolve and new industry requirements emerge.
